Thank You for a Great Year

We had a great year at ElkGroveRealEstate.com

Why, do you ask? It is all because of you, our friends and clients, who trusted us to provide you the best real estate professionalism in our community. Just like you, we know that Elk Grove is a great place to live, shop and play. Don’t forget to check out or informational pages at LivingInElkGrove.com and ShoppingInElkGrove.com

Another reason we had a great year at ElkGroveRealEstate.com was that our youngest son, Joshua, who had been our Transaction Coordinator, decided to join us as a Realtor. He passed his test and now we are working as a family, assisting you and your families.  Joshua is still going to college but joins me with clients to learn the business through first hand experience when it fits with his college schedule.

Thanks again for helping us have a great year
as your Realtors.

It’s Fall – Time to Enjoy Apples and Pumpkins

A couple of weeks ago I asked what you were planning to do over the weekend, but this time I want to talk about activities that you may want to consider over the next several weeks.

As I noted in the title, it is time to enjoy Apples and Pumpkins. If you return to my other website, www.LivingInElkGrove.com and click on October on my Activities Calendar on the left side of the page, you will want to look for links for Apple Hill and Pumpkin Patches.

Take yourself and your family, if you have one, and visit a pumpkin patch. It is great to get out and enjoy the fall weather while you walk through a pumpkin patch looking for the perfect pumpkin.

Next, take a trip up to Apple Hill. Enjoy some apple donuts or apple fritters or apple pie. Yes, I know that they are loaded with sugar, but maybe you can splurge a little once and a while. Remember, there are apples in there somewhere, so they can’t be all bad for you.

So, live a little. Enjoy the fall weather. Later this month, I will write about my apple butter recipe.  My wife posted our recipe for baked chicken with Jack’s Apple Butter on RecipeTsar back in 2007(Now Food.com). After show you how easy it is to make a great apple butter, you will want to use if for something more than just your morning toast. Jack’s Apple Butter Chicken: http://www.food.com/recipe/jacks-apple-butter-chicken-203596

Next month I will bring you up-to-date on the local stores in Elk Grove that sell Christmas decorations. Yes, I know that you can find them at Kirklands, or Michaels, or Target, or Hobby Lobby, but I want to tell you about a local, non-chain store and a local charity or two that are already stocking up with Christmas goodies just for your shopping pleasure.

If you cannot wait until next month, then you can check out my www.ShoppingInElkGrove.com website, click on the Business Search Link and type “Christmas” into the search box. You will find two of the stores that I will talk more about later.

as you turn your house into a home.

Great Restaurant – Simply Thai

I found a great Thai restaurant last week when showing houses to two of my buyers.  We had finished looking at homes and they asked me to join them for lunch, but I had to pick out a good restaurant for them, since they didn’t know the area yet.

Although I had an idea of which restaurant to pick, I wanted them to be part of the choice but to also learn a little about the local area. Since we were in the neighborhood between Sheldon Road and Calvine Road, I opened my smart phone and logged into my website at www.ShoppingInElkGrove to bring up all of the local shopping centers. From the main page, I clicked on the map link at the upper right side of the screen. The map shows all of the shopping areas in Elk Grove. I then clicked on the black dots that represent each shopping area. We all looked at the information about all of the stores and restaurants, and together we picked out a small place called, “Simply Thai”.

I had the Yellow Curry with Chicken over Steamed Rice. They both had the Pad Thai. All three meals were wonderful. Now, if they end up buying the house in that neighborhood, they already know about a great local restaurant and how to find others as they get to know the community.  Check it out yourself.

If you are looking more for local services, rather than shopping centers and restaurants, go to my website at www.LivingInElkGrove.com and you will find a wealth of information about our wonderful community.

Remember, it isn’t enough that your Realtor knows about how to assist you with buying and selling houses, your Realtor needs to know about the community. Everything from schools to services, to farmer’s markets, to where to shop and where to enjoy a great restaurant. You will find all of that and more on my two websites. Take a look and let me know what you think.

as you turn your house into a home.

Our Local Farmers’ Markets

I know that most of the posts on this blog have related to real estate, and not enough to the joy of  living in Elk Grove. In this post, I want to share information about the local farmers’ markets.

We were fortunate recently to spend some time in France, and really enjoyed visiting two of their neighborhood farmers’ markets in Paris.

I am getting hungry just looking at them

They were outstanding, but we have some great ones here in the greater Sacramento area, from Elk Grove to El Dorado HIlls to Davis. One of the best ways to find out more about these markets is to visit the Yelp site where you will get real reviews from real folks, not professional reviewers. Below you will find the list of certified farmers’ markets as well as links to the Yelp page for some local markets. Check out the sites online then plan on a day trip to each market, visiting all of them over the next few weeks. Pick out your favorites and go back every week.

We have enjoyed visiting the market here in Elk Grove, but we are always up for a day trip to enjoy the other markets in the area.

Links for Farmer’s Markets on Yelp are noted below as well.

Davis Farmers Market (Davis)

Sunday Farmers Market (Downtown)

Midtown Farmers Market (Midtown)

El Dorado Hills Farmers Market (El Dorado Hills)

Farmers Market Laguna Gateway Center (Elk Grove)

Davis Ranch (Sloughhouse)For those of us in the Elk Grove-Wilton area, this discussion would not be complete without mentioning the Davis Ranch out in Sloughhouse. I know that it does not qualify as a farmer’s market, as it really is just a fruit and vegetable stand, but they do have some of the best sweet corn in the area as well as a great pumpkin patch every fall. Just head out Highway 16 toward Rancho Murieta. You will find them on the north side of the highway in the little community of Sloughhouse.

Don’t forget to try something new. Most of us only partake of about a dozen vegetables, but there are hundreds to choose from.

Bring your recyclable grocery bags with you. I always keep a couple in the car because you never know when you might spot a farmers’ market or a fruit and vegetable stand worth visiting. Bring your kids along too. Let them get an understanding of where their food comes from, the farmers who actually grow the food.

as you turn your house into a home.

Limone (Lemony) Cauliflower

I recently attended a cooking class given by Liza Kilgariff of Golden Gourmet Catering.  I’ve enjoyed her cuisine before at catered events, and now I had the opportunity to watch her work and taste her exquisite fare.  We not only got to see her knife skills, but we also heard all about the region of the food we would eat.  We heard the “back story” of dishes, such as Puttanesca….hmm, is the truth behind the name related to “women of the evening”  who needed something quick and easy to make after a long day of working….or is it so named because of it’s spicy flavor?  Did I mention we also received the recipes of the dishes she made….well, we did!

One of my favorite dishes (and I made many……okay, ALL of the dishes Liza made were my new favorites!) was the Steamed Cauliflower with Garlic, Lemon, Olive Oil and White Wine.  With this being summertime, it’s the perfect time to make this dish….and it’s even nice enough for company.  Add this to your recipe repertoire.

Let me know if you’d like to more recipes like this!  I’m happy to share!!  And if you are interesting in attending a demonstrational cooking class to learn directly from Liza, click here: Golden Gourmet Culinary Classes.
