Our Local Farmers’ Markets

I know that most of the posts on this blog have related to real estate, and not enough to the joy of  living in Elk Grove. In this post, I want to share information about the local farmers’ markets.

We were fortunate recently to spend some time in France, and really enjoyed visiting two of their neighborhood farmers’ markets in Paris.

They were outstanding, but we have some great ones here in the greater Sacramento area, from Elk Grove to El Dorado HIlls to Davis. One of the best ways to find out more about these markets is to visit the Yelp site where you will get real reviews from real folks, not professional reviewers. Below you will find the list of certified farmers’ markets as well as links to the Yelp page for some local markets. Check out the sites online then plan on a day trip to each market, visiting all of them over the next few weeks. Pick out your favorites and go back every week.

We have enjoyed visiting the market here in Elk Grove, but we are always up for a day trip to enjoy the other markets in the area.

Links for Farmer’s Markets on Yelp are noted below as well.

Davis Farmers Market (Davis)

Sunday Farmers Market (Downtown)

Midtown Farmers Market (Midtown)

El Dorado Hills Farmers Market (El Dorado Hills)

Farmers Market Laguna Gateway Center (Elk Grove)

Davis Ranch (Sloughhouse)For those of us in the Elk Grove-Wilton area, this discussion would not be complete without mentioning the Davis Ranch out in Sloughhouse. I know that it does not qualify as a farmer’s market, as it really is just a fruit and vegetable stand, but they do have some of the best sweet corn in the area as well as a great pumpkin patch every fall. Just head out Highway 16 toward Rancho Murieta. You will find them on the north side of the highway in the little community of Sloughhouse.

Don’t forget to try something new. Most of us only partake of about a dozen vegetables, but there are hundreds to choose from.

Bring your recyclable grocery bags with you. I always keep a couple in the car because you never know when you might spot a farmers’ market or a fruit and vegetable stand worth visiting. Bring your kids along too. Let them get an understanding of where their food comes from, the farmers who actually grow the food.
